In this paper I analyse Los cien caballeros by Vittorio Cottafavi, a loose adaptation of Lope de Vega's Las famosas asturianas, a historical drama. When compared to Lope’s play, I show that Cottafavi’s work transvaluates the depiction of Hispanic noblemen and moors, the hétero-image of the latter appearing as effeminate, negative and evil. I also confirm that the analysis of film adaptations might shed some light on the meanings of the original literary works, which risk passing unnoticed if only textual versions are taken into account.
