This essay is based on the premise that Mexican postrevolutionary nationalism was not a monolithic process. The concept, during the first half of the Twentieth Century, was contested by intellectuals from both the left and right and these criticisms fractured the unanimity of the official ideology. This text describes the broad characteristics of the nationalist project and examines the arguments directed against it both from the left and right of the political spectrum. It emphazises some of the reactions to revolutionary art and closes with a reflection on the way in which a historical problem relates to the present.
