This article intends to present an investigation which is being carried out with the purpose of characterising Portuguese Sign Language (PSL) interpreters, either when they exercise their professional activity exclusively because they have a higher degree in this field or when they do it because they are also CODA (Children of Deaf Adults). Thus, we seek to examine whether the different backgrounds are a determining factor in the interpreters´ professional activity or in the deaf community (main PSL interpretation beneficiaries) perception of it, as well as which converging aspects should be enhanced in order to achieve a professional complementarity that may benefit all participants in the process.
