The article examines the "Torquemada" novels, which correspond to the series known as "contemporary novels". The purpose of this reading is to describe the series according to the notions of victim and martyr by showing the connection of the characters with their social milieu (Spain, Madrid, and mesocracy) and their historical moment (a genuinely Spanish realism that is vital, spiritual, and transcendant). Another important objective lies on the exploration of the novel-oriented subject (miser, lender; noble and marquis) in the light of the religious symbols of fire, cross, Purgatory, and Saint Peter as they are reformulated by Galdós's aesthetics: society as part of a narrative material.Este artículo indaga las novelas de Torquemada, que ...
