The present article develops the opposition religion/modernity in the novel La Casa de las dos Palmas by Manuel Mejía Vallejo. The discussion focuses in how its main characters-Los Herreros-experience and suffer that opposition in their longing to develop an individuality that paradoxically is going to be tied to their traditional ways of living, and to the Antioquean region which represents, in part, the country´s history. The concept of modernity is interpreted in a broad sense: how subjects are constituted in a society and their search of such individuality that, besides its meaning of freedom of speech, produces a sense of emptiness and an existential anguish.
