El Cura de Pintag, Dr. José Riofrío

Quito�s Catholic Church, in the early nineteenth century, had to support new ideas that came from Europe, embodied in several scientists who visited the Audience. Bourbon Reforms were the trigger for many religious people that assumed a decisive stance against the subsequent absence of Ferdinand VII and the impositions of Joseph Bonaparte in his place. One of those was the priest of Pintag, José Riofrío. After school tuition at the San Fernando Royal College and the Convent Máximo San Pedro Mártir of Quito, the priest received the sacerdotal robe in 1783. He was a priest tha was closely identified with the cause of the weak, despite, his friendships with some Creole Enlightenment and nobles allowed him to participate in the planning, and subsequent consolidation of the revolutionary movement in Quito in 1809. As chaplain of the troops he faced hard times against Papayan militias in the northern part of the Audience, however, the abdication of the Board in October of that year caused his capture, prison and subsequent sacrifice along with the other ideologues of the libertarian revolt, the August 2, 1810.La Iglesia católica de Quito tuvo que soportar a comienzos del siglo XIX los nuevos idearios que llegaron de Europa, encarnados en varios científicos que visitaron la Audiencia. Y las reformas borbónicas fueron el detonante para que muchos religiosos asumieran una postura determinante frente a la posterior ausencia del rey Fernando VII y la imposición de José Bonaparte en su lugar. Uno de aquellos fue el cura de Píntag, José Riofrío. Tras su colegiatura en el Real Colegio San Fernando y del Convento Máximo San Pedro Mártir de Quito obtuvo la toga sacerdotal en 1783. Desde entonces estuvo muy identificado con las causas del pueblo marginado; no obstante, su amistad con algunos criollos ilustrados e incluso con algunos nobles le permitió participar en la planificación y posterior consolidación del movimiento revolucionario de Quito en 1809. Como capellán de las tropas enfrentó los más dramáticos momentos contra los milicianos payaneses en la zona norte de la Audiencia; sin embargo, la abdicación de la Junta en octubre del mismo año motivó su captura, prisión y posterior sacrificio, junto con los demás ideólogos de la revuelta libertaria, el 2 de agosto de 1810
