During the reign of Charles V, Juan Martínez de Recalde from Bilbao organized the emperor's fleets on the Spanish north coast. He was also responsible for a maritime messager service between the north coast, England and the Low Countries, using small ships. Furthermore, he coordinated the transport of Spanish troops to the Low Countries, to be used in the wars against the French. In 1588, the great naval officer Juan Martínez de Recalde occupied an important place in the history of the Invincible Armada.
