Los Juan Martínez de Recalde, de Bilbao: de mercaderes a heroe naval (1504-1588)

During the reign of Charles V, Juan Martínez de Recalde from Bilbao organized the emperor's fleets on the Spanish north coast. He was also responsible for a maritime messager service between the north coast, England and the Low Countries, using small ships. Furthermore, he coordinated the transport of Spanish troops to the Low Countries, to be used in the wars against the French. In 1588, the great naval officer Juan Martínez de Recalde occupied an important place in the history of the Invincible Armada. Specially in English and American literature we find him as the most important naval officer of the fleet. He died shortly after returning to Spain following a disastrous journey around the British Isles. In this article I try to link the history of both men, Charles V's maritime coordinator and Philip II's naval hero. We can find different people called Juan Martínez de Recalde in Bilbao from 1504 onwards, always related to the relations between Spain and the northern parts of Europe. At the same time, we are able to study their relationship with the Habsburg government. They are a clear example of a family that could maintain its mercantile vocation for a long time, while gradually entering into the service of the crown. It shows the relations between the royal burocracy and the comercial world.Durante la época de Carlos V, Juan Martínez de Recalde funcionaba en Bilbao como proveedor de las flotas del emperador en el Cantábrico. A la vez se dedicaba a organizar el servicio de zabras para el transporte de mensajeros y correos entre España y los puertos de Flandes e Inglaterra. Además, Juan Martínez era el responsable del transporte de tropas españolas para la lucha contra Francia en los Países Bajos. En 1588, el gran héroe naval Juan Martínez de Recalde ocupó un lugar especial en la historia de la Armada Invencible. Sobre todo en la literatura anglosajona se le considera como el marino más importante de la flota. Muere nada más volver a España después de un desastroso viaje alrededor de las Islas Británicas. En este artículo intento vincular la historia de ambos personajes, la del proveedor de la época de Carlos V con la del héroe naval de los tiempos de Felipe II. Resulta que desde 1504 siempre encontramos en Bilbao a hombres con el nombre de Juan Martínez de Recalde que desarrollaron un papel relevante en las relaciones entre España y el norte de Europa. Al mismo tiempo podemos estudiar su vinculación con el gobierno de los Habsburgo. Es un claro ejemplo de una familia que durante mucho tiempo mantiene su vocación mercantil mientras entra gradualmente al servicio de la Corona.
