UID/HIS/04209/2013The union of Portuguese and Castile Kingdoms in the person of Philip II meant that the Portuguese Empire was added to his personal heritage. The Monarchy could not be maintained without ensuring the operation of the King’s fleets. Throughout the sixty years of Political Union, there were a transfer and an exchange of men, funding and supplies between the Courts of Madrid and Lisbon whereby King’s fleets on Portugal kept on.
