A single movement work for concert band, The Wind and The Machine draws upon Charles Ives and Igor Stravinsky for inspiration and formulaic process. Just as Ives uses in his Violin Sonata No. 3, The Wind and The Machine uses cumulative setting, a form that begins with the development of the theme and does not state the theme in full until near the end. Stravinsky\u27s Symphonies of Wind Instruments is used for formulaic and orchestrational ideas. The Wind and The Machine uses a recording made outside during a windy day at a busy intersection to dictate form and from which melodic and percussive ideas are drawn.
