Typically, games classified as ‘massively multiplayer online games’ (MMOGs) are competitive, real-time, large-scale interactive simulations of graphical virtual worlds. Currently, most (if not all) commercial MMOGs are implemented as centralized services, where hundreds or even thousands of ‘server’ machines, maintained by the game service provider, are responsible for running almost all of the virtual world simulation. This incurs a significant equipment and communication cost for the game providers.
