Tonight I want to make the case for bold, imaginative, reciprocal, and sustained engagements between colleges and universities and their many constituent communities, local as well as global. If we intend to pursue the vision of the university as a public good, with broad benefits for our knowledge society---especially for the understanding and practice of democracy and the values of diversity, social justice and peace---we must initiate and support these new kinds of engagements.
