Capt. I. N. Chamberlin served in Company A, 123rd Regiment, 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, VIII Corps. Capt. Chamberlin kept an account of his daily activities and the actions of his Regiment while statione din Winchester, VA (April 1863-Sept. 1863). He was involved in Court Martial proceedings and chronicled the judgments. When Capt. Chamberlin was killed at the Second Battle of Winchester, the diary was “Presented by Capt. E. Bateman to John Hamilton, Sept. 18th 1863.” Dr. John Hamilton then used it as a ledger 1864-1875 and inscribed it by stating “The former Yanky officer, having fallen with many in the field of Battle at Winchester June 15th 1863 had no further use for a memorialism book, it fell into the hands of a Confederate officer.”ht...
