Runaway stars of spectral type O and B are massive and thus young stars that, surprisingly, are currently leaving or already have left the star-forming regions of the Milky Way, i.e., the spiral arms inside the Galactic disk. They are therefore supposed to be the result of an ejection event that forced them to run away from their original place of birth. Possible ejection scenarios encompass dynamical interactions in dense star clusters, such as close binary-binary encounters, or a supernova explosion disrupting a binary system. Unraveling the origin of runaway OB stars can bring new insights into several distinct fields of astronomy.
