This inquiry seeks to bring together all pertinent factors bearing upon the implantation of the first Christian Mission in a virgin field on the Guinea Coast of West Africa, beginning in 1637. The characteristics of this territory, geographical, anthropological and economic, which welcomed the first members of different missions orders of the Roman Catholic Church, and to which their successors were required to adjust over almost three centuries, culminating in the establishment of the mission in 1895 and its growth during its first quarter-century, are examined.
