Sociology of greek cyberspace: on line identities and virtual reality

Cyberspace moving from Web 2.0 (means) to Web 3.0 (community context), is being organized from the inside by an non hierarchical way, similarly to the self-organization of the natural systems, which are open, self-regulated and governed by openness relations. Communication is the key element that brings together this system, while information pushes it towards change/evolvement. In the context of post-modernity, the perception around the world that surrounds us and the tolerance of diversity, are being expanded. The self boundaries become less limited, as one can “present” themselves "everywhere" and become "open to any possible experience."The self is perceived as a structure formed by society with the necessary mediation of the Other, or as manifestation in a transient show that aims to control the reaction of Others.«The maturer person experiencing a new socialization process through the web 2.0 Internet, which is dominated by communication1 and virtual reality, finds himself in front of a digital mirror, which provides him the opportunity to practice on role playing and study the structure of the self or even add new aspects. Human being is comprised by systems· his identity is being perceived as a system, and what is more, a multiple and distributive one2· society is also being perceived as a system, where actors interact incited by their tendency to achieve maximum optimization and satisfaction. The relations developed among them as well as towards the emerging situations, are determined and governed by a system of common and sufficiently structured symbols3. Within this complex of systems, mechanisms of socialization are being activated from the early stages of life, mechanisms that are similar to those that are also activated within the self-organized system of the Internet, where socialization is tertiary, and developed by mechanisms of reinforcement and imitation. The partaker-user is expected to enter the “digital treaty” of communication, to expose publicly a part of his privateness, and to join one or more groups of knowledge or interest, forming the virtual side of his self, which in turn is going to affect the non virtual side of his self. When developed in this context, computer mediated communication, can expand the boundaries of the self and promote the formation of real relationships, as long as the preexisting knowledge of the person and established knowledge of his self in general, allows them to manage information in a way that will enable him to mediated the real meaning. Overexposure to the information, which in many cases is over fetched in order to “trap” reader’ s attention, can affect the user/reader, who may suffer from conditions such as distraction, stress symptoms, memory loss, or memory disorder, and prevent the information from being converted into knowledge4. Communication is channeled through different channels for the Greek Internet users, which include e-mail, message exchange in real-time, engagement in chat sites, forum, blog- weblogs, video-calls, telephone calls through Internet5. Mosts preferred means of communication are the social media - increased use by 1550% since 2008 to 20106, where users satisfy important personal needs, such as the feeling of belonging, the strengthening of personal values, the satisfaction of curiosity, the communicating with friends and family, relaxation, entertainment, or similar personality search and emotional expression7. Cyberspace provides the chance of communication and updating, as well as the chance of social capital enhancement (resources provided by social contacts)8, which may «bond» (bonding) or «bridge» (bridging) the parties between them. Through social media (SNS), the user aims at self-presentation, impression management and presentation of friendship9. Users of social media tend to self-disclosure, by exposing more personal and sensitive data, driven by the self-disclosure of their friends or other contacts (reciprocity)10. By publishing personal information, users usually aim at enhancing their popularity11. Self-disclosure, despite context collapse, is becoming more intense as the number of the “friends” increases, affecting positively on social relationship maintenance. This is due to the fact that the great number of friends on the internet, may increase the possibility for sharing and interacting. The use of Social Network Services may ensure the necessary context for the formation of groups, which could, under circumstances, develop community features, such as solidarity, moral support, etc. Behavioral adjustment and potentiality of the virtual community, in general, is largely determined by the topic of the group’s interest, and by the managing. The role model in the on line communities is set by the reaction (likes, comments, reshares) towards the ongoing action 12. Internet as a means affects the wiring of the brain, which becomes “hypertextual” as the attention switches from one point to another. This brain rewiring equips the new generation of users with impressive new skills, such as scanning, and rapid mental switch. Internet as an environment can allow us to «to feel free to experience and fulfill our nature as social beings, and positive»13. Internet as a community influences people of different backgrounds to start sharing a more common understanding/perception towards the topic under negotiation, and to enhance self-activity. On line identity for most users is just an extension of their real identity· as a whole or partially, it still constitutes a representative sample of -mainly the good side- of our real identity. The user controls this sample of identity asynchronously14, and decides on the text and the photos that will represent him, influenced by his friends and the kind of material they publish. Building process of the avatar identity is rather similar to the process of shaping a real identity. It depends on genetic, racial, ethnic and social class features, and on the capability of networking, exploiting existing skills and acquiring new ones. The environment of the game sets the context of the experience, affecting the players’ ability to develop and maintain an identity. The rules of the game exist there for the player to follow them, but he can brake them for his best interest, and manage to stay on the game fraudulently. The combination of capabilities and skills sets apart the uniqueness of an avatar. «Virtual Reality can immerse us to a computing environment, which simulates reality through the use of special devices, that send an receive information15, as a «presentation or changing image of reason, pleasure, regret»16. In each one of these forms, though, Internet may become a trap when being used thoughtless, unbiased and passive, exposing the user at the risks of addiction or other mental disorders. Modern identity is formed under the effect of digital technology during the last decade, and it is perceived as more variable. Instead of having one distinct identity, people now have more and intercovering identities, depending on their age and social factors. These new concept of identity is characterized by hyperlinking, change of our age stages, and ambiguity between the public and the private sphere.In the on line environment, where -according to RCS (reduced social cues) theory- there is greater private self-awareness and less public self-awareness, that results in promoting self-disclosure, user can easily cross the limits of self-promotion in this game of reciprocity, and start disclosing information that expose his privacy. Modern technology tends to draw in user’s interest. Complete immersing though, can mislead them in regards to who and where they really are, confusing identity features, and the «is» with the «there».On line’s group environment can enhance or weaken some identity features of the participant, given that “in the context of the group we can perceive ourself as a member of a social group and as an individual unit that bears the features of this group»17. Even more in the post-modern context, where groups’ dynamics is enhanced by the freedom of pluralism and the opportunity of participation in the cultural derivative, providing participants authenticity and legitimacy. The level of on line use in Greece, however, is low compared to the use of the EU27, mainly due to logistical deficiencies, cost and non-existent institutional framework, but also indifference and lack of skills. However, the 16-24 age group of young people in the country is almost catching up with the EU27 young people, whilst male men in the country are also gradually reducing the gap. Women in Greece, however, are steadily lower than the European average, with a difference of more than 18 percentage points, and at national level they are significantly lower than that of men.Adult on line habits revolve around communication, information and entertainment, and gradually around commercial consumption. Better use, such as for transactions with the public or e-banking, is hampered by the slow adaptation of public services to new technologies, but also by the prejudice or ignorance of the real potential of the Internet as a means. Findings tend to contradict or partially contradict the stereotypes of Internet use by children and adolescents, pointing to a rather exaggerated fear over it. Children are already confronted with obscene material by watching television, bullying is extended to the Internet by an existing acquaintance, and a live encounter with strangers is rare. Using the Internet is not purely constructive or entertaining. Undoubtedly there are risks, such as exposure to pornographic material, cyber-bulling, seduction and addiction. This is why parents should be able to monitor discreetly, having set straight use limits of the Internet, in order to avoid squabbles.Digital divide between Greece and other EU members creates disparities between individuals as well as between states, as the Internet promotes economy and sociability. The Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) is indicatively low compared to other European countries, although it has been improving over the past two years. The interest of users is mainly focused (perhaps due to unemployment) on communication and free entertainment. But could this communication and participation stimulate a momentum to improve even some of the country's social parameters?In Greece, Internet as a community has created community-based groupings that have succeeded in provoking reforming movements. A relative example to that, was the collective action of animal welfare on line groups, that resulted in tightening the animal protection law, which was finally revised. Although collective action can trigger small reform movements, it is doubtful whether it could contribute to the reconstruction of the Greek collective identity.Collective identities formed on line can’t extend their influence unless the real institutions start interacting between them. Reforming movements through Internet can’t cause great reforms, without the participation of social institutions. Only interaction between the social institutions can cause real social changing, in cultural symbols, behavioral rules and value systems.Greek users on the Internet, sometimes humorously and sometimes ironically, are interested in what is going on around their society and around the world, which -according to Foucault- is a prerequisite for citizens to master their future. Greek society, however, is going through a prolonged economic, social and moral crisis, showing low indices at all levels.User action can go beyond personal identity and self-exposure and give the Internet a constructive dimension, even a dimension of «Life» (as Vios). However, existing institutions are unable to adapt to modern technologies, let alone respond to the demands of web communities, in order to help reconstruct the wider collective consciousness.In cyberspace, however, the following business advice may well apply: "By opening the communication channels, we have the ability to push ourselves into another dimension, which we certainly are not used to. The dimension of cooperation for a common result. So we have the opportunity to unite our forces and through "collective intelligence" to solve difficult "everyday" problems18.Ο κυβερνοχώρος στη μετάβασή του από τη μορφή Web 2.0 (μέσο) στη μορφή Web 3.0 (κοινοτικό πλαίσιο), οργανώνεται εκ των έσω με μη ιεραρχικό τρόπο, όπως συμβαίνει στην αυτοοργάνωση των συστημάτων που παρατηρούνται στη Φύση, τα οποία είναι ανοιχτά και αυτορρυθμιζόμενα και διέπονται από σχέσεις ανοιχτότητας. Ως κεντρικό συνεκτικό του στοιχείο αναδεικνύεται η επικοινωνία, ενώ ως το στοιχείο μεταβλητότητάς του αναδεικνύεται η πληροφορία. Στο πλαίσιο της μετανεωτερικότητας, η αντιληπτικότητα γύρω από τον κόσμο που μάς περιβάλλει και η ανεκτικότητα προς το διαφορετικό φαίνεται να διευρύνονται. Τα όρια του εαυτού γίνονται πιο μεταβλητά, καθώς ο άνθρωπος μπορεί να «βρίσκεται παντού» και να είναι «ανοιχτός σε κάθε πιθανή εμπειρία». Ο εαυτός γίνεται αντιληπτός ως μία κατασκευή που διαμορφώνεται από την κοινωνία με την απαραίτητη μεσολάβηση του Άλλου, είτε ως εκδήλωση σε μία παροδική παράσταση που στόχο έχει να ελέγξει την αντίδραση των Άλλων. «Το πιο ώριμο άτομο βιώνοντας μία νέα διαδικασία κοινωνικοποίησης μέσα από τη χρήση του Διαδικτύου υπό τη μορφή web 2.0, η οποία κυριαρχείται από την ανθρώπινη επικοινωνία1 και την εικονική πραγματικότητα, βρίσκεται μπροστά σε ένα ψηφιακό καθρέφτη που του προσφέρει τη δυνατότητα να πειραματιστεί με το παίξιμο περισσότερων ρόλων και να μελετήσει την κατασκευή του εαυτού ή ακόμη και να προσθέσει καινούργιες πτυχές. Ο άνθρωπος αποτελείται από συστήματα, η ταυτότητά του γίνεται αντιληπτή ως σύστημα και μάλιστα πολλαπλό και διανεμητικό2· η κοινωνία επίσης γίνεται αντιληπτή ως σύστημα, όπου οι δρώντες αλληλεπιδρούν υποκινούμενοι από την τάση μέγιστης «βελτιστοποίησης και ικανοποίησης». Οι σχέσεις τους με τις καταστάσεις, αλλά και οι μεταξύ τους σχέσεις, καθορίζονται και διέπονται από ένα σύστημα κοινών και αρκούντως δομημένων συμβόλων3. Μέσα σε αυτό το σύμπλεγμα των συστημάτων, ενεργοποιούνται μηχανισμοί κοινωνικοποίησης από τα πρώτα χρόνια ζωής, παρόμοιοι με αυτούς που ενεργοποιούνται και στο αυτοοργανωμένο σύστημα του Διαδικτύου, όπου η κοινωνικοποίηση είναι τριτογενής και διαμορφώνεται περισσότερο από τους μηχανισμούς ενίσχυσης και μίμησης. Ο κοινωνός-χρήστης καλείται να συνομολογήσει μία ψηφιακή συνθήκη επικοινωνίας, να εκθέσει δημοσίως κομμάτι από την ιδιωτικότητά του, και να προσχωρήσει σε μία ή περισσότερες ομάδες γνώσης, ενδιαφέροντος, δυνητικοποιώντας την εικονική πλευρά του εαυτού, η οποία με τη σειρά της επηρεάζει την πραγματική. Η διαμεσολαβούμενη επικοινωνία σε αυτό το νέο πλαίσιο μπορεί να διευρύνει τα όρια του εαυτού και να προαγάγει τη δημιουργία πραγματικών σχέσεων αρκεί η προϋπάρχουσα γνωστική βάση του ατόμου και η εδραιωμένη γνώση του εαυτού γενικότερα, να του επιτρέπει να διαχειρίζεται τις πληροφορίες κατά τέτοιο τρόπο, ώστε να μπορεί να διαμεσολαβεί το πραγματικό νόημα. Η υπερέκθεση στην πληροφορία, η οποία λαμβάνει τεχνητή μορφή ακριβώς για να προσελκύει την προσοχή των Άλλων, αναμφισβήτητα μπορεί να είναι επιβαρυντική για τον σύγχρονο άνθρωπο, καθώς εκτός από την απόσπαση προσοχής μπορεί να προκαλέσει επίσης και διαταραχή μνήμης, όπως και συμπτώματα άγχους, αποτρέποντας έτσι τη μετατροπή της πληροφορίας σε γνώση4. Η επικοινωνία διοχετεύεται μέσα από πολλούς διαύλους για τους Έλληνες χρήστες, όπως είναι το ηλεκτρονικό ταχυδρομείο, η ανταλλαγή μηνυμάτων σε πραγματικό χρόνο, η αποστολή μηνυμάτων σε chat sites και η συμμετοχή σε ομάδες συζήτησης (forum), η ανάγνωση blog- weblogs, η βιντεοκλήση, τα τηλεφωνήματα μέσω διαδικτύου και η δημιουργία ιστολογίων5, και κορυφώνεται στις σελίδες κοινωνικής δικτύωσης -η χρήση των οποίων αυξήθηκε κατά 1550% από το 2008-20106- όπου οι χρήστες καλύπτουν σημαντικές προσωπικές ανάγκες, όπως είναι το αίσθημα του ανήκειν, η ενίσχυση προσωπικών αξιών, η ικανοποίηση της περιέργειας, η επικοινωνία με φίλους και οικογένεια, η χαλάρωση, η διασκέδαση, η αναζήτηση παρόμοιων χαρακτήρων και η συναισθηματική απελευθέρωση7. Ο κυβερνοχώρος προσφέρεται για επικοινωνία και ενημέρωση, καθώς και για ενίσχυση του κοινωνικού κεφαλαίου (τους πόρους που περιέχονται στην κατοχή κάποιου χάρη στις κοινωνικές του επαφές)8, το οποίο μπορεί να «δένει» (bonding) ή να «γεφυρώνει» (bridging) τα μέλη. Μέσα από τις ιστοσελίδες κοινωνικών δικτύων (SNS), ο χρήστης επιδιώκει την αυτοπαρουσίαση, τη διαχείριση εντυπώσεων και της παρουσίαση της φιλίας9.Οι χρήστες του κοινωνικού Διαδικτύου τείνουν να αυτοαποκαλύπτουν πιο προσωπικές και ευαίσθητες λεπτομέρειες, όταν το κάνουν και οι φίλοι και οι γνωστοί τους (αμοιβαιότητα)10. Με τη δημοσίευση προσωπικών πληροφοριών, οι χρήστες έχει βρεθεί ότι προσπαθούν να δομήσουν ένα πιο δημοφιλές στάτους σε μία εφαρμογή11. Η διαδικασία της αυτοαποκάλυψης , παρά την κατάρρευση του πλαισίου, εντείνεται όσο αυξάνεται το κοινό, επιδρώντας μάλιστα θετικά στη διατήρηση των κοινωνικών σχέσεων. Ο λόγος για τον οποίο συμβαίνει αυτό αποδίδεται στο γεγονός ότι ο μεγαλύτερος αριθμός ατόμων στο δίκτυο κάποιου χρήστη μπορεί να αυξήσει τις πιθανότητες για μοίρασμα πληροφοριών και αλληλεπίδρασης.Η χρήση των Μέσων Κοινωνικής Δικτύωσης μπορεί να εξασφαλίσει το απαραίτητο εκείνο πλαίσιο για τη δημιουργία ομάδων, οι οποίες υπό προϋποθέσεις μπορούν να αναπτύξουν χαρακτηριστικά κοινότητας, όπως αλληλεγγύη, ηθική υποστήριξη κτλ. Η συμπεριφορά των μελών και η δυναμική της διαδικτυακής κοινότητας, εν γένει, καθορίζεται σε μεγάλο βαθμό από το θέμα που αυτή πραγματεύεται κι από τον τρόπο με τον οποίο γίνεται η διαχείριση. Το πρότυπο στη διαδικτυακή κοινότητα χτίζεται από τη συντελούμενη δράση και από την αποδοχή της που εκφράζεται με likes, σχόλια και αναδημοσιεύσεις12. Η χρήση του Διαδικτύου ως μέσου ανακαλωδιώνει τον ανθρώπινο εγκέφαλο, ο οποίος γίνεται «υπερκειμενικός», μεταπηδώντας από το ένα σημείο στο άλλο και εφοδιάζει τα παιδιά της ψηφιακής γενιάς με δεξιότητες, όπως η σάρωση και η ταχεία νοητική εναλλαγή. Το Διαδίκτυο ως περιβάλλον μπορεί να μας επιτρέψει να «λειτουργούμε ελεύθερα και να αισθανόμαστε ελεύθεροι να βιώσουμε και να εκπληρώσουμε τη φύση μας ως θετικά και κοινωνικά όντα»13. Το Διαδίκτυο ως κοινότητα μπορεί να μας συνομαδώσει ως διαφορετικότητες με μία πιο κοινή αντιμετώπιση/αντίληψη απέναντι στο υπό διαπραγμάτευση θέμα και να ενισχύσει την αυτενέργειά μας. Η διαδικτυακή ταυτότητα για τους περισσότερους χρήστες δεν είναι παρά μια προέκταση της φυσικής τους ταυτότητας, καθώς συνολικά ή εν μέρει, δεν παύει να συνιστά ένα αντιπροσωπευτικό δείγμα -αν και κυρίως της θετικής πλευράς- της πραγματικής ταυτότητας· ένα δείγμα που περνάει ασύγχρονα από τον έλεγχο του χρήστη14, ο οποίος αποφασίζει για το περιεχόμενο του κειμένου και το είδος των φωτογραφιών που θα τον αντιπροσωπεύσουν, έχοντας πάντα και ως γνώμονα τους φίλους του και το υλικό που εκείνοι δημοσιεύουν. Η διαδικασία κατασκευής της αβαταρικής ταυτότητας δεν διαφέρει πολύ από τη διαδικασία διαμόρφωσης της πραγματικής ταυτότητας. Εξαρτάται από γενετικά, φυλετικά, εθνικά και ταξικά χαρακτηριστικά, καθώς κι από τη δυνατότητα της δικτύωσης και της εξέλιξης σε επίπεδο αξιοποίησης υπαρχόντων προσόντων και απόκτησης νέων δεξιοτήτων. Ο κόσμος του παιχνιδιού ορίζει το πλαίσιο της εμπειρίας των παικτών, επηρεάζοντας την ικανότητά τους να διαμορφώσουν και να διατηρήσουν μία ταυτότητα. Οι κανόνες του παιχνιδιού υπάρχουν για να τηρούνται, ο παίκτης όμως δύναται να τους παραβιάσει προς ίδιον όφελος, και να παραμείνει στο παιχνίδι με δόλο. Ο συνδυασμός ικανοτήτων ξεχωρίζει τη μοναδικότητα ενός άβαταρ στο παιχνίδι. «Η Εικονική Πραγματικότητα μπορεί να μας εμβαπτίσει σε ένα υπολογιστικό περιβάλλον, το οποίο προσομοιώνει την πραγματικότητα μέσω της χρήσης ειδικών συσκευών, οι οποίες στέλνουν και λαμβάνουν πληροφορία15, ως «παράσταση ή εικόνα διαλλαγής λόγου, ηδονής, λύπης»16. Σε καθεμία από αυτές τις μορφές, όμως, το Διαδίκτυο μπορεί να μετατραπεί σε παγίδα, όταν η χρήση του είναι αλόγιστη, άκριτη και παθητική, εκθέτοντας το χρήστη στον κίνδυνο του εθισμού κι άλλων ψυχικών διαταραχών. Η νέα ταυτότητα που διαμορφώνεται υπό την επίδραση της ψηφιακής κυρίως τεχνολογίας, και ιδιαίτερα κατά τη διάρκεια της τελευταίας δεκαετίας, διαφέρει αριθμητικά από τις προηγούμενες: δεν είναι μία, είναι πολλές. Οι άνθρωποι αντί να έχουν μία ξεχωριστή ταυτότητα, έχουν διάφορες αλληλοεπικαλυπτόμενες ταυτότητες, καθεμιά από τις οποίες υπερισχύει ανάλογα με τα ηλικιακά στάδια και το περιβάλλον και χαρακτηρίζεται από υπερσυνδεσιμότητα, αλλαγή των ηλικιακών σταδίων και ασάφεια ανάμεσα στη δημόσια και την ιδιωτική σφαίρα. Στο διαδικτυακό περιβάλλον, όπου σύμφωνα με τη θεωρία (RCS reduced social cues), υπάρχει μεγαλύτερη προσωπική αυτοεπίγνωση (private self-awareness) και μικρότερη δημόσια αυτοεπίγνωση (public self-awareness) με αποτέλεσμα να προάγεται η αυτοαποκάλυψη, ο χρήστης μπορεί εύκολα να ξεπεράσει τα όρια της αυτοπροβολής σε αυτό το παιχνίδι της αμοιβαιότητας (reciprocity) και να προβεί στην αποκάλυψη στοιχείων που εκθέτουν την ιδιωτικότητά του. Η σύγχρονη τεχνολογία έχει την ιδιότητα να απορροφά το ενδιαφέρον του χρήστη. Η απόλυτη εμβύθιση, όμως, μπορεί να παραπλανήσει το χρήστη ως προς το ποιος πραγματικά είναι και το που βρίσκεται, εναλλάσσοντας στα θολά, στοιχεία από τις ταυτότητές του καθώς και το «είναι» με το «εκεί».Το περιβάλλον της διαδικτυακής ομάδας μπορεί να ενισχύσει τα άλλα στοιχεία ταυτότητας ή να τα αποδυναμώσει, καθώς στο «πλαίσιο της ομάδας υφίστανται νέες ταυτοτικές δυνατότητες: μπορούμε να αντιληφθούμε τον εαυτό μας ως μέλος μιας κοινωνικής ομάδας και ως μία ατομική μονάδα που έχει τα χαρακτηριστικά αυτής της ομάδας»17.
