The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus: a Comparative Study on Patristic and the Modern Interpretation

The Thesis, The Parable of the Rich Man and Lazarus. A Comparative Study on Patristic and the Modern Interpretation, provides a new reading of the relevant parable by drawing on both an original research of Greek, Latin and Syriac sources and a constructive dialogue between the early and the modern interpretation of the Third Gospel. This study is divided into an introduction, four chapters and a conclusion. The first chapter involves the text criticism, the semantic, text pragmatic and narratological analysis. The next two chapters critically describe the reception of the parable in the early patristic interpretation and the modern commentaries on the Gospel of Luke. In the fourth chapter, the author provides a new reading of the parable of the rich man and Lazarus in the fourth chapter. His main insights is that the parable under discussion transcends the contrast between the rich and the pour and focuses on the truth, that salvation and the Kingdom of God are present in the person of Jesus. Therefore, the salvation, which the rich man of the parable is asking for his five brothers, is interpreted not as a reward for some good deeds but rather as a consequence of one’s relationship with Jesus Christ. This study proves that the patristic interpretation can provide the modern historical-critical exegesis with a deeper theological perspective in the interpretation of the New Testament, while the conclusions of the current scholarship on Luke help us to better evaluate the patristic readings.Ἡ διδακτορικὴ διατριβὴ μὲ τὸν τίτλο: Ἡ παραβολὴ τοῦ πλουσίου καὶ τοῦ πτωχοῦ Λαζάρου. Συγκριτικὴ μελέτη τῆς πατερικῆς καὶ τῆς σύγχρονης ἑρμηνείας ἀποσκοπεῖ νὰ προσφέρη μία καινούργια ἑρμηνευτικὴ προσέγγιση τῆς ὑπὸ ἐξέταση παραβολῆς μέσα ἀπὸ πρωτογενῆ ἱστορικο-φιλολογικὴ μελέτη καὶ δημιουργικὸ διάλογο μὲ τὴν ἑρμηνεία Ἑλλήνων, Λατίνων καὶ Σύρων Πατέρων ἀπὸ τὸ πρωτότυπο. Ἡ ἐργασία αὐτὴ διαιρεῖται σὲ εἰσαγωγή, τέσσερα κεφάλαια καὶ συμπεράσματα. Τὸ πρῶτο κεφάλαιο περιλαμβάνει τὴν κριτικὴ τοῦ κειμένου καὶ τῶν ἀρχαίων μεταφράσεων, τὴν ἀνάλυση τοῦ λεξιλογίου, τῆς ἀλληλουχίας μορφῆς καὶ περιεχομένου, τῆς σημασιολογίας, τῆς ἀφηγηματικῆς ὀργανώσεως καί, τέλος, τῆς πραγματικῆς λειτουργίας τοῦ κειμένου. Τὰ δύο ἑπόμενα κεφάλαια ἀναλύουν τὶς τάσεις τῆς πατερικῆς καὶ τῆς συγχρόνου ἑρμηνείας ἐπὶ τῇ βάσει ἑπτὰ σημείων τὰ ὁποῖα κατόπιν γίνονται καὶ σημεῖο ἀναφορᾶς γιὰ τὴ σύγκριση Πατέρων καὶ συγχρόνων. Στὸ τέταρτο κεφάλαιο διατυπώνεται μία ἑρμηνευτικὴ πρόταση, ἡ ὁποία προκύπτει ἀπὸ τὴν ἐνδελεχῆ ἔρευνα τοῦ κειμένου καὶ τὴ σύγκριση μεταξὺ τῶν Πατέρων καὶ τῶν συγχρόνων: ἡ παραβολὴ θεωρουμένη ὡς ὅλον ὑπερβαίνει τὴν ἀντίθεση μεταξὺ πλουσίων καὶ πτωχῶν καὶ ἐπικεντρώνει τὴν προσοχὴ τοῦ ἀναγνώστη στὴν ἀλήθεια ὅτι ἡ σωτηρία, ἡ εὐτυχία, ἡ Βασιλεία τοῦ Θεοῦ, εἶναι παροῦσες στὸ πρόσωπο τοῦ Ἰησοῦ. Κατὰ συνέπεια, ἡ σωτηρία τὴν ὁποία ἀναζητᾶ ὁ πλούσιος γιὰ τοὺς πέντε ἀδερφούς του πρέπει νὰ νοηθῆ ὄχι ἁπλῶς ὡς ἀνταμοιβὴ γιὰ κάποια ἔργα εὐποιίας ἀλλὰ ὡς ἀπόρροια μίας ζωντανῆς σχέσεως μὲ τὸν Χριστό. Μὲ τὴν ἐργασία αὐτὴ ἀποδεικνύεται ἔμπρακτα ὅτι ἡ πατερικὴ ἑρμηνεία μπορεῖ νὰ δώση στὴν ἱστορικοκριτικὴ μέθοδο μία βαθύτερη θεολογικὴ διάσταση καί, ἀντιστρόφως, τὰ πορίσματα τῆς σύγχρονης ἔρευνας βοηθοῦν νὰ ἀξιοποιήσουμε καλύτερα τὶς πατερικὲς ἀναγνώσεις
