A novel BEM development based on reciprocal theorem in terms of velocities: theory and implementation

The boundary element method (BEM) constitutes one of the major computational tools for solution of differential equations corresponding to problems that are of interest to the engineer. In general, the BEM is not as widespread in comparison with other, better known numerical methods, such as the finite element method (FEM) and the finite difference method (FDM). The reason the FEM is widely known in the scientific community and widely used by professional engineers has to do with the availability of a large number of commercial software programs in conjunction with the flexibility of the method in modeling real situations. At the same time the BEM is widely acknowledged by the scientific community as a specialized method capable of high accuracy, but one that is not widespread as far as applications are concerned. One basic reason for this is the absence of appropriate software for the BEM. Specifically, currently available computer software for the BEM is somewhat obsolete since it is based no design paradigms and programming languages that are lowly replace by more modern structures. As an example of contemporary software design we mention object oriented programming which tends to replace the more standard procedural type of programming, at as far as scientific applications are concerned. Contemporary commercial computer programs based on the BEM are targeted to solve very specialized problems of mechanics and it is difficult to generalize their use. In the present thesis use is made of object oriented design and the BEM is programmed using the java programming language. The end products are labeled as jBEM and jBEMapplication and are freely available through a special web page designed for spreading the use of the BEM (www.openbemproiect.org). The BEM is oriented to works the solution of problems in elastodynamics which have wide use in structural problems of civil engineering. The classical statement of the BEM, which is based on reciprocal theorems of elastodynamics in terms of displacements, has been investigated and is known to have stability problems. As a result, there are many cases where the BEM is inappropriate for solving problems where the time scale is especially large. In the present thesis the problem is approached from the point of view of introducing a new reciprocal theorem for elastodynamics in terms of velocities. This novel view of reciprocal theorems in terms of velocities is most appropriate for solving transient problems of elastodynamics and results in numerical algorithms with improved behavior regarding the stability performance. In this study the incompressible material is also included as a special case since it has many applications in soil mechanics. In conclusion the formulation of this new reciprocal theorem and the parallel construction of boundary element methodology in terms of velocities where utilized in production of a software package named jBEM. At the same the standard BEM formulation, mentioned previously has also being programmed within the jBEM framework for comparison purposes.Η μέθοδος των συνοριακών στοιχείων (ΜΣΣ) αποτελεί ένα από τα σύγχρονα υπολογιστικά εργαλεία προς επίλυση διαφορικών εξισώσεων για προβλήματα που άπτονται του ενδιαφέροντος του μηχανικού. Η ΜΣΣ δεν είναι διαδεδομένη σε σχέση με άλλες, ποιο γνωστές αριθμητικές μεθόδους, όπως είναι αυτές των πεπερασμένων στοιχείων (ΜΠΣ) και των πεπερασμένων διαφορών (ΜΠΔ). Αυτό οφείλεται κυρίως στην ευρεία διάδοση της ΜΠΣ στην επιστημονική κοινότητα και στον επαγγελματικό χώρο του μηχανικού λόγο της παρουσίας πληθώρας επαγγελματικών προγραμμάτων και της ευελιξίας της μεθόδου σε θέματα προσομοίωσης. Παράλληλα η ΜΣΣ τυγχάνει ευρείας αναγνώρισης από τη επιστημονική κοινότητα ως μια εξειδικευμένη μέθοδος υψηλής ακρίβειας, αλλά δεν είναι διαδεδομένη στον τομέα των εφαρμογών. Μια βασική αιτία της έλλειψης διάδοσης της ΜΣΣ είναι και η απουσία κατάλληλου λογισμικού. Το μέχρι τώρα διαθέσιμο λογισμικό Η/Υ της ΜΣΣ είναι ελαφρώς παρωχημένο καθότι στηρίζεται σε σχεδιαστικά υποδείγματα και γλώσσες προγραμματισμού τα οποία τείνουν σταδιακά να αντικατασταθούν από πιο σύγχρονες δομές. Ένα παράδειγμα σύγχρονης σχεδίασης λογισμικού είναι ο αντικειμενοστρεφής προγραμματισμός ο οποίος τείνει να αντικαταστήσει το κλασικό, τουλάχιστον για επιστημονικές εφαρμογές, διαδικαστικό προγραμματισμό. Τα υπάρχοντα προγράμματα που αξιοποιούν τη ΜΣΣ στοχεύουν στην αντιμετώπιση πολύ ειδικών προβλημάτων της μηχανικής και δύσκολα μπορούν να επεκταθούν. Στη παρούσα διατριβή γίνεται χρήση της αντικειμενοστραφούς σχεδίασης και προγραμματίζεται η ΜΣΣ στη γλώσσα προγραμματισμού java, το δε τελικό προϊόν (με ονομασία προγράμματος jBEM και jBEMapplication) είναι ελευθέρα προσβάσιμο από ειδική ιστοσελίδα που δημιουργήθηκε για τη διάδοση και επέκταση της ΜΣΣ (www.openbennproiect.orq). Η ΜΣΣ είναι ιδιαίτερα προσανατολισμένη για την επίλυση προβλημάτων ελαστοδυναμικής τα οποία έχουν ευρεία εφαρμογή σε κατασκευές πολιτικού μηχανικού. Η κλασική διατύπωση της μεθόδου η οποία βασίζεται στο θεώρημα αμοιβαιότητας της ελαστοδυναμικής σε όρους μετακινήσεων, έχει διερευνηθεί και παρουσιάζει προβλήματα αστάθειας. Το αποτέλεσμα είναι πως πολλές περιπτώσεις να καθίσταται η ΜΣΣ ακατάλληλη για την αντιμετώπιση προβλημάτων όπου η χρονική κλίμακα είναι ιδιαίτερα μεγάλη. Στη παρούσα διατριβή επιχειρείται μια κριτική επαναπροσέγγιση του θεωρήματος αμοιβαιότητας και διατυπώνεται ένα νέο θεώρημα στην ελαστοδυναμική σε όρους ταχυτήτων. Η νέα αυτή διατύπωση του θεωρήματος αμοιβαιότητας σε όρους ταχυτήτων αποδεικνύεται, πέραν του ότι είναι κατάλληλη για καλύτερη περιγραφή της ελαστοδυναμικής στο πεδίο του χρόνου, να καταλήγει και σε αλγόριθμους με πολύ βελτιωμένη αριθμητική συμπεριφορά όσο αφορά τα προβλήματα ευστάθειας. Στη μελέτη που έγινε συμπεριλήφθηκε η περίπτωση του ασυμπίεστου υλικού το οποίο περιγράφει πρωτίστως προβλήματα εδαφομηχανικής. Συμπερασματικά η διατύπωση του νέου θεωρήματος αμοιβαιότητας και η μόρφωση μεθοδολογίας συνοριακών στοιχείων σε όρους ταχυτήτων χρησιμοποιήθηκε για την κατασκευή του λογισμικού jBEM. Ταυτόχρονα ελέγχθηκε και η κλασική διατύπωση της ΜΣΣ η οποία συμπεριλαμβάνεται στο εν λόγο λογισμικό
