This study is an evaluation of the activities, which accompany the literary texts found in fifty selected EFL coursebooks. These coursebooks are those most often used in Greece to teach students of secondary school age. The object of the study is to determine which activities are most effective in sensitizing students to an appreciation of the literary merit of a text and to determine what proportion of tasks this constitutes. The study shows why such tasks are more effective in exploiting texts. It also shows how less effective tasks can be improved in order to make full use of the benefits which literary texts have to offer.
