The main aim of this article is an attempt to trace the social meaning and ways of perceiving the representatives of the musical profession in Poland by using the category of occupational prestige. The analysis is based on the results of a research on the dynamics of musical professional careers in Poland conducted in the years 2015-2016 (a research grant awarded by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage). The article consists of five parts. The first part provides an analysis of the various ways of defining and researching prestige in social sciences.
