Recently it was demonstrated that a picosecond infrared laser (PIRL), with wavelengths centered at 2.94 µm and pulse duration from ten to few hundred picoseconds, can be used for 'soft' laser desorption to eject water-rich samples into the gas phase without inducing compositional or structural changes to biomolecules. PIRL ablation works under the mechanism of desorption by impulsive vibrational excitation (DIVE), where the picosecond pulse duration of PIRL is longer than the thermalization of the vibrational excitation of the OH stretch mode of water and shorter than the thermal diffusion and acoustic expansion times of the excited volume. In addition, a wavelength centered at 2.94 µm is resonant with the OH stretch mode of the water molec...
