The aim of this article is to trace the evolution of the textile industries in the Lombard cities during the 14th century. The first part analyzes the international market for woolen cloths in the second half of the century, a phase which can be investigated trough exceptionally rich, mainly Tuscan, sources. This research corrects the idea, proposed by John H. Munro in many papers and generally accepted by historiography, that during the 14th century European wool industries reorientated themselves towards the production of high-quality, or even luxury, cloths.
