A Renaissance piece such as Baldo features Aesopic fables and medieval tales which had been passed down throughout the years. The author uses this type of narrative as a direct and effective way of teaching readers how to behave. The author thus justifies the existence of chivalric romances at a time when their lack of reality was causing controversy. It is by using these fables that the author states the legitimate place chivalry romances held within the humanistic knowledge of his time. This article lists some of the fables and stories which are mentioned and feature in Baldo and which can also be found in well-known literary works from the 14th century. Then the content, use and composition of these works are compared
