MURAL SEBAGAI MEDIUM KRITIK POLITIK (Analisis Semiotik Gambar Politik Jotos-jotosan, Karya Serikat Mural Surabaya)

The mass media is not only a partner for the government but but also as opposition, and has a duty to control the work and performance of the government by criticizing the government, as long as it does not violate the code of ethics. Conveying criticism through mass media can be done by articles, rubrics, caricatures or murals. Mural is one of the mass media used as a tool of political criticism by the Surabaya Mural Community. Visual media has become a new thing, especially in several cities in Indonesia, the mural uses visualization techniques that are packaged attractively so that they are not only entertaining but informative. As an object of research, the mural picture of hit the corner politics contains innuendo about current political conditions, the purpose of the research is to find out about the meaning of the signs in the mural. In this study, literature review is a reference to assist researchers in conducting research, including mass media theory, mass communication, visual communication and social criticism theory. Marshall McLuhan (2011: 18) suggests Medium is The Message, that the media used to convey messages is as important as the message itself. While mass communication is the process of sending symbols that contain meaning through channels or media such as print media, auditive media, visual media (images, paintings, murals), or audio-visual media (television and films) ( Winarni, 2003: 51). The meaning contained in a mural that is verbal is communication using words, whether oral or written, and nonverbal which includes facial expressions, body language, sign language, sounds, agreed signs of humans, ritual objects and drawings (paintings, posters, murals). The method in this study is a qualitative approach with an interpretive type which is a subjective view of the researcher. The object of the research is mural Boxing Politics punching with data collection techniques using documentation in the form of taking photos of murals. The researcher used Charles Sanders Peirce's semiotic analysis which used icons, indeks, and symbols as references to know a sign, and to use the concept of connotation and denotation. The results of research on mural images Boxing Politics punching indicate that the meanings contained in murals can be seen through icons, indeks and symbols so that, the researchers concluded that this mural image made sarcasm against the current conditions of political competition, especially during the campaign period. Political competition in the murals is represented by images of origami puppets and collections of men clashing together, while the iconic image of women is a representation of women's ability to compete and survive in political circles filled with polemics. Political competition that is judged justifies any means and giving a negative impact to the peace of the people represented by the indeks of pink boxing gloves interpreted as firmness and soul that is hard to use by origami puppets and men fighting boxing. Whereas the symbol that has relevance to the object is represented by boxing politics punchin
