Jazz as an Educational Science : towards an explanatory model of jazz in terms of the development of the musician’s skills

Cette thèse vise l’élaboration d’un modèle explicatif et compréhensif du jazz comme un système de production de savoir ; production de savoirs anthropologiques parce que communs et transférables à tous les hommes ; production de méthodes et de conditions pour apprendre ; production de savoirs pour et sur l’éducation puisque le jazz ainsi théorisé permet des applications et des transpositions dans d’autres contextes que celui de la musique ou des arts. Le jazz peut alors être pensé comme un système éducatif.Cette thèse étudie ici le jazz à partir de quatre dimensions conceptuelles et le définit comme un système à partir duquel les jazzmen apprennent et développent différents savoirs et savoir-faire liés à leur expérience de la pratique du jazz. Mais en faisant reposer l’épistémologie de cette thèse sur l’Interactionnisme Symbolique, cette recherche s’approche au plus près des acteurs et de leurs interactions afin de saisir au plus juste la formation de leurs savoirs, et démontrer ainsi que le jazz est un système éducatif. Différentes théories permettent d’analyser les données du terrain, en empruntant aux cadres de l’expérience d’Erving Goffman, à la sociologie de l’expérience de François Dubet, aux théories de la motivation, ou encore aux théories portant sur les dynamiques des savoirs ; mais également, en référence à la théorie enracinée d’Anselm Strauss, un travail de théorisation se construit à partir des résultats de l’enquête notamment à partir de cartes conceptuelles réalisées lors des entretiens.Les dispositifs de jeu du jazz sont alors pensés comme autant de situations éducatives formelles, non formelles et informelles, et l’ensemble de ces données permet d’aboutir à une schématisation de quatre champs d’expérience du jazz et à l’identification de huit paramètres d’apprentissage.Ce modèle explicatif donne des clés de compréhension et une ouverture vers diverses applications en mettant en lumière une dynamique d’inscription de l’individu dans une autodirection en apprentissage à partir de son expérience.This thesis aims to develop a comprehensive explanatory model of jazz as a system for producing knowledge. A system that produces anthropological knowledge in the sense of knowledge common to and transferable to all human beings; that produces learning methods and learning conditions; that produces knowledge for and about education in general, since jazz as understood by this theory can be applied and transposed to learning contexts other than the musical or artistic ones. Jazz can thus be understood as an educational system. The present thesis studies jazz in four conceptual dimensions, defining jazz as a system that allows its practitioners to develop various kinds of knowledge and skill.The epistemological foundation of the thesis lies in Blumer’s Symbolic Interactionism, which implies an approach based on proximity to the actors and their interactions, in order to grasp the workings of the knowledge creation process as accurately as possible and thus demonstrate the function of jazz as an educational system. Various theoretical lenses are used to analyse the field data, borrowing from Erving Goffman’s Frame Analysis, from Francois Dubet’s sociology of experience, from the theories of motivation as well as from knowledge dynamics. At the same time, with reference to Anselm Strauss’s grounded theory, we have been able to construct a significant part of the theoretical framework of the thesis using results from field research, notably the mental maps created during the interviews. The organization of jazz performance is perceived as a sequence of educational situations, whether formal, non-formal, or informal. A global appraisal of the research data leads us to postulate four experience fields within jazz practice, and to identify eight learning parameters.This explanatory model holds the key to understanding and opens the door to a range of applications by illuminating the steps taken by the individual on the path towards self-directed learning, as prompted by his or her direct experience
