Les cycles organiques de Rankine (ORC), équipant des centrales de production électrique géothermiques, représentent une alternative aux centrales conventionnelles et sont en plein essor du fait, entre autres, de leur faible impact sur le réchauffement climatique. Leur développement s'accompagne d'un déploiement de cette technologie sur des sites d'exploitation de plus en plus complexes, notamment munis de sources chaudes de températures relativement faibles.
