A new festulolium cultivar, "Tohoku 1", was developed at the National Agricultural Research Center for the Tohoku Region. We applied for registration of this cultivar in 2009 based on the Plant Variety Protection and Seed Act. This cultivar was selected from the basic population consisting of festulolium cultivars bred abroad. The mean value of dry matter yield of this cultivar was about 10% higher than that of "cv. Barfest" at six cool temperate zone locations in Japan over a three-year period. Yields of all entries were highest in the first harvest year and then decreased from year to year.
