Trijų Kretingos bernardinų bažnyčios sakyklos skulptūrų restauravimas

The pulpit in the Church of the Lord Revelation for St. Mary the Virgin in Kretinga dates back to the first half of the 17th century. It is a large multi-edged stand elevated on a high support. Its walls are decorated with round columns, including semicircular niches with twelve apostles. The pulpit and its support are embellished with sculptural decorative caps and carvings. Historical and art data is scarce; there is no strong opinion about the art school or environment where this object could have been created; the author is unknown (it seems that art historian Marija Matušakaitė is more inclined to attribute these pieces of art to local school when discussing the artistic properties of the sculptures). In 2000, Pranas Gudynas Centre for Restoration at the Lithuanian Art Museum received three sculptures from the group of apostles on the pulpit: St. Peter, St. Jacob and an unidentified apostle. Each figure is carved from solid wood with a base portraying the Earth. St. Peter and St. James’s sculptures are attached to rectangular wooden pedestals (4x17x13 cm). The authentic décor of sculptures was repainted several times in various periods, in certain places eight layers of paint, including the intermediate polish cover, were found. The author’s décor in all the three sculptures is similar, the manner of repainting is also the same. The article contains the description of the restoration of the three sculptures on the pulpit of Bernadine Church of Kretinga. The sculptures were restored by way of conservation with slight retouches using the same materials and work methodology despite certain differences in their state and defects
