Analyses and conservation of two sculptures from the church ensemble in Skaruliai

The publication describes the whole survived ensemble of wooden sculptures, attributed to the Early Baroque, gracing the interior of the church in Skaruliai (Jonava distr.) up to the present days. It had been little known to the public and insufficiently analyzed up to now, but recently it is causing a particularly great interest. The author briefly reviews the history of the church, the sculptures belonging to the ensemble as well as their state before restoration. Making use of the long-term continuous Department of Cultural Heritage program, the Lithuanian Art Museum Pranas Gudynas Restoration Centre restored two out of twelve sculptures of apostles in 2003-2004 We Saint with Wrap on the Head and St Jacob. Both sculptures are of similar size, carved from linden tree, polychromed, repainted several times in light grey monochromatic colours. The author describes the entire course of restoration and makes the conclusion that the restoration process and its results give to art theorists and historians new data and possibilities to study and make more accurate the origin of the works, the period, style, attribution, possibly, the authorship of old masters mentioned in the publication
