This is an analysis of the identification of the Cuban black woman in the island’s contemporary narrative. The chosen authors and works are representative of the intellectual context of the island in the 21st century: Negra by Wendy Guerra and Sobre las olas y otros cuentos by Inés María Martiatu. The selection of these works is justified by its treatment of gender and race. We propose a literary analysis based on theoretical criteria from subaltern studies and black feminism that bring out and make explicit elements used to crystalize the Afro-Cuban woman’s identity in texts. We conclude with a typology of black female characters constructed from fictional circumstances in texts
