The modification of large‐area surfaces by means of thin‐film vacuum coating is a well‐established industrial technology for a broad range of applications. Plasma and evaporation coated products can be found in many areas of life. Vacuum coating equipment offer high throughputs and a high level of process performance. Therefore, the higher costs of this equipment compared to atmospheric coating technologies, which arise due to the vacuum, are in many cases not a decisive factor for an investment. Furthermore, vacuum coating technologies are often the more sustainable solution in ecological terms. New applications benefit from a vast body of industrial experience and can be quickly transferred into industrial processes
