From the moment they appeared, French punk, rap and ragga music distinguished themselves from the French song which remains intimately linked to singing. Indeed, at the heart of those three styles, vocal expression is closer to speaking than singing, and shows itself to be more rhythmical than melodic. Because there are few harmonic relations between the voice and the instruments, because of the speed of vocal rhythms and the absence of score, those musical styles are resistant to traditional musical analysis tools.
