International audienceBased on the analyses of aural testimonies within the context of arbitrary detention and extreme violence, this article examines the processes of appropriation and transformation of the sound or musical dimensions of these events. It is based mainly on the testimony of British journalist Sean Langan, who was held hostage in Pakistan in 2008, as well as testimonies of several survivors of the Paris Bataclan terrorist attack of 13 November 2015. Taking an ecological approach to sound perception, it explores how the meaning given to music and sounds depends strongly on the physical, emotional and sensory conditions of listening.
