The historical research carried out in 1987, mainly at the Vaucluse Departmental Archives, enables us to establish a chronology for the thirteenth century rampart, edifice of which little was hitherto known. The wall's construction was probably completed in 1222, it was taken down following the town's seige by Louis Xin in 1226, then soon rebuilt in the 1230's. Charles of Anjou and Alphonse of Poitiers put an end, in 1225, to it's short life. The study of certain documents led us to believe in the existence of remains under the present day Avignon. As a result, 705 metres of the curtain wall, and 12 semi-circular towers were discovered, providing us with capital information concerning the structure and composition of the rampart. However, ...
