In this essay, we will approach the subject of oral tradition from the very general framework of the relationship between language and cultural identity. The first part of this text is introductory in character and deals with several of the theoretical principles regarding the role of language as a condition for the development of knowledge. The second part applies these principles to oral traditional, which we consider to be the way in which members of societies without writing (first orality) or with some knowledge of writing (second orality) assimilate their specific cultural features. The third part takes a deeper look at the opposition between orality and writing, drawing from linguistic theory to enumerate a set of constituent feature...
