The importance of oral tradition: Tte group Coyaima - Colombia

In this essay, we will approach the subject of oral tradition from the very general framework of the relationship between language and cultural identity. The first part of this text is introductory in character and deals with several of the theoretical principles regarding the role of language as a condition for the development of knowledge. The second part applies these principles to oral traditional, which we consider to be the way in which members of societies without writing (first orality) or with some knowledge of writing (second orality) assimilate their specific cultural features. The third part takes a deeper look at the opposition between orality and writing, drawing from linguistic theory to enumerate a set of constituent features of oral discourse. The fourth part is dedicated to a case study: the role of the oral tradition for an indigenous population involved in a process of cultural change, in specific the Coyaima located in the southern part of Colombia. Nowadays, this group has a population of 3000, and in light of the fact that some historians and Colombian anthropologists have affirmed that are no remaining descendants of the Pijaos and as such, do not include us in the textbooks, I testify that we are still living on in spite of history. This is the reason why I, as a native Coyaima, continue with my commitment to give a voice to my people through writing.En el presente ensayo vamos a abordar la temática de la tradición oral en un marco muy general de la relación entre lenguaje e identidad cultural. La primera parte del texto es de carácter introductorio y enuncia algunos principios teóricos acerca de la función del lenguaje como condición para el desarrollo de todo conocimiento. La segunda parte aplica estos principios a la tradición oral, considerada como la forma como los miembros de las sociedades sin escritura (oralidad primaria) o que tienen algún conocimiento de la escritura (oralidad secundaria) van asimilando sus rasgos culturales específicos. La tercera parte ahonda en la oposición entre oralidad y escritura enumerando desde la teoría lingüística un conjunto de rasgos constitutivos del discurso oral. La cuarta parte está dedicada a un estudio de caso: el papel de la tradición oral para una población indígena involucrada en un proceso de cambio cultural como es el grupo indígena coyaima, ubicado en el sur de Colombia. Este grupo actualmente cuenta con una población de 3000 indígenas, y en vista de que algunos historiadores y antropólogos colombianos han afirmado que ya no quedan indígenas descendientes de los pijaos y por ello no nos incluyen en los libros de texto, yo como representante de mi pueblo certifico que todavía estamos sobreviviendo pese a la historia. Por esto, como indígena coyaima sigo con el compromiso de dar voz a mi pueblo a través de la escritura.Universidad de San Buenaventura - Cal
