The substantial presence of the military in the intricate machinery of Russian government is a legacy from the Soviet era. Yet, the USSR is bygone and cards have been reshuffled. Once mere representatives of their social corps, the military is now a full-fledge actor on the Russian political scene, but individually so on the whole political spectrum. With V. Putin, they may well have taken control over the main political centres. This view may yet be fallacious : far from taking over power as a constitued body, the military close to Putin are his near-relations, most being - just as the civilians - kins from Saint-Peterburg or former KGB brothers-in-arms.
