A Study on the Catholicity and Connotation of Geometry

This is experimental research concerned with simple geometric shapes and abstract geometry such as circle, square, triangle. This research is about complex simplicity which is the relationship between two apparently contradictory themes. In this study, it is supposed that simple shapes can have their origins in more complex shapes. When selecting only a particular part of a shape, the implication might be that it is a simple shape. There are some artists who have grasped this concept and developed it in their own way. This is especially true in the case of those involved in abstract in art, which well explains the expressions of 'implication' and 'connotation'. The geometry shape on this study is more close to poetic geometry rather than mathematical geometry. For this research, some artists have been selected whose work deals with the implied shapes or simplified patterns already mentioned. They include such as, an old drawing by Leonardo da Vinch, illustrating the general concept of simple geometrical rela ionships. Poetic geometry through in this research by the korean traditional craft work 'Jogakbo' and illustrator Molly Bang. The work of Pieter Cornelis Mondrian and Roy Lichtenstein are demonstrated how figures are implied in abstract art. Geometry has been chosen for this research, in order to investigate the wide scope permitted in the transformation of complex forms, shapes or patterns, into simplified, yet meaningful images of great beauty and meaning
