The relationship between tissue cholesterol concentration and certain disease states has been studied extensively. For example, an increase in serum concentration of cholesterol has been observed in nephrotic syndrome, myxedema and controlled diabetes mellitus. On the other hand, a decrease in serum cholesterol concentration has been found in late starvation, anemia and cirrhosis (1). It has been particularly interesting to relate cholesterol metabolism and atherosclerosis. Hypertension and hypercholesterolemia are two important factors related to the etiology of atherosclerosis. It is possible that atherosclerosis has multicausal origins of which hypercho- lesterolemia is the primary etiologic agent (2)
