Open Heart is a collection of lyric, narrative, and dramatic poems in six sections. Taken together, the poems ask what there is in the social and cultural institutions we have received that a woman can value. Each section addresses some realm of human values as applied to women\u27s lives. Section one concerns itself with doubt, hope, and the uncertainty surrounding death, primarily through the speaker\u27s examination of her religious heritage and her inability to fully accept its offering. The second section measures marriage and traditional roles of women against the myths and fairy tales in which such roles are offered as the highest good for women.
