Biliverdin reductase-A (BVR-A) is a pleiotropic enzyme involved in cellular stress responses. It not only transforms biliverdin-IX alpha into the antioxidant bilirubin-IX alpha but through its serine/threonine/tyrosine kinase activity is able to modulate cell signaling networks.
