In the past few years, newly developed procedures and technologies have improved endoscopic recognition of the gastrointestinal tract. In particular, narrow band imaging, multiband imaging, and contrast enhancement make possible the "real-time," on demand recognition of the gastrointestinal mucosa during the endoscopic examination. These imaging techniques have been designed to enhance visualization of the vascular network and surface texture of the mucosa in an effort to improve tissue characterization, differentiation, and diagnosis.
