The collection contains three letters from William Steinberg to Emmy Rubensohn, two of which are handwritten, regarding concerts he conducted for the Jüdischer Kulturbund in Kassel.William Steinberg was born Hans Wilhelm Steinberg in Cologne in 1899. He was a famous up-and-coming conductor in Germany, and also famous as a pianist. In 1936, he emigrated from Germany to Palestine, where he was active in organizing the Palestine Symphony Orchestra, which eventually became the Israel Philarmonic Orchestra. From Palestine, he went to the United States, where he first conducted the Buffalo Symphony Orchestra, then the Pittsburg Symphony Orchestra, and ended his career as director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
