National audienceSettlement is a subject often discussed in archaeology. The traces of settlement and areas of communal activity discovered in the Auvergne amount to a surface area of at least 20–30ha. The architectural features at Champ Madame may have been brought by groups from Italy, as are certain elements of the lithic assemblage; this leads us to explore the possibility that certain forms of architecture were standardised and derived from a southern tradition. The appearance of post-built structures of two different types – east-west oriented, two-aisled houses and huts – marks a change around 3907–3660 BC.
