HIJAB FASHION DI KALANGAN MAHASISWI UNIVERSITAS MUHAMMADIYAH MALANG (Studi Tentang Komodifikasi Hijab Di Kalangan Mahasiswi Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang)

The phenomenon of headscarves among female students, particularly known as the hijab, occurs because of the growing perception to wear them gracefully, but not necessarily in accordance to Islamic law or the correct guidance of Islam. As time passes, Muslim women continuously adjust and modernize the shape and style of their veils. Since then, many students also began to change way they dress and wear their veils to follow modern trends by looking at the hijab models that around the world through the internet or fashion magazines. The problem is when the hijab is worn as a fashion in different ways among students. Therefore, this study examines and analyzes it from various perspectives that can be used as a basis for research issues and examine aspects related to the use of headscarves among Muslim women, especially in the Muhammadiyah Malang campus. Thus this research is titled "Fashion Hijab Among College Students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang (Study of Commodification Among College Students of University of Muhammadiyah Malang)". The results of the study show that now the hijab is no longer a rigid object and coinsides together with religious orders. However, now the hijab is more a lifestyle for Muslim women. It was found that the commodification of headscarves among these university students are adjusted with latest trends or fashions. This was concluded from the majority of the asnwers obtained from research subjects, yet this research does not rule out the possibility that the goal of these particular styles are altered according to Syar’i hijab style. This specific alteration is also widely used among Muhammadiyah University of Malang. Through George Simmel’s theory of fashion, it is shown that fashion is formed by the social interaction between students both individually and among their communities
