Research for EIAPP Parent Engine Test Guideline : Marine Engines' Emissions into Air - Regulation and Reduction

Wärtsilä Marine Solutions commissioned this thesis to improve the testing procedure of marine parent engines, as well as to harmonise the way of working between two delivery centres. This was the initial aim, which exceeded the scope of Bachelor thesis. The new aim of the thesis is to provide background information through research for developing the guideline and tools. The work on the guideline and the tools is a follow-up task. The thesis research has been implemented through literature review and 17 specialist interviews. Interviews and other sensitive material has been removed from the public version. Environmental pollution is a widely recognized global problem. However, marine traffic environmental impact has been quite neglected until recently: regulation for emissions to air from shipping came into force as late as 19 May 2005. There are almost 90 000 vessels in the world fleet, and they produce 11,17 % of transport sector’s greenhouse gases (incl. int., coastal and domestic traffic). Road transport is the biggest polluter with 72,06 %, and marine traffic comes 2nd. The emissions derive mainly from the engines: CO2, NOx, SOx, HC, CO, and PM. The emissions have damaging effects on human health, environment, and the built environment. The main effects of shipping are strengthening global warming and deteriorating the air quality especially near the coasts. The emissions are challenging to eliminate but can be reduced. IMO’s MARPOL Annex VI and NTC 2008 regulate mainly NOx and SOx emissions by setting limits and describing guidelines for testing the emissions. CO2 regulation is also in the making. Primary methods to reduce the emissions include lowering fuel oil’s sulphur content (SOx) and adjusting the engine’s combustion performance (NOx). Secondary methods include installing an SCR device (NOx) and a scrubber (SOx) after the engine. It can be concluded that the updated aims of the thesis were met, and that the marine industry will become cleaner simply because there is no other option. The thesis, and the development tasks which follows, offer Wärtsilä practical and valuable input. Development suggestions are presented in Wärtsilä’s internal version. Though, it can be stated that the collected research materials and acquired learning are enough to create first versions of the guideline and necessary Excel-tools. It is a great start to have the first versions, which can then be commented on and revised, and therefore continuously improved.Opinnäytetyön tilaaja, Wärtsilä Marine Solutions, haluaa kehittää merimoottorien päästötestausta ja harmonisoida kahden eri toimituslaitoksen työtavat. Tämä oli alkuperäinen tavoite, johon opinnäytetyön laajuus ei riittänyt. Uusi tavoite on toimia pohjatutkimuksena testiohjeen tekemiselle sekä työkalujen kehittämiselle. Ohjeen ja työkalujen työstäminen tapahtuu opinnäytetyön jälkeen. Opinnäytetyö toteutettiin kirjallisuuskatsauksen ja 17 asiantuntijahaastatteluiden keinoin. Haastattelut sekä muu arkaluontoinen materiaali on poistettu julkisesta versiosta. Vaikka ympäristön saastuminen on laajasti tiedostettu maailmanlaajuinen ongelma, meriliikenne on kuitenkin yksi ala, jonka ympäristövaikutuksia on pitkään laiminlyöty. Sen ilmakehään vaikuttavien päästöjen sääntely astui voimaan vasta vuonna 2005. Koko maailman laivastoon kuuluu lähes 90 000 alusta, jotka tuottavat 11,17 % liikennesektorin kasvihuonekaasupäästöistä (mukaan luettuina kansainvälinen, kansallinen ja rannikolla tapahtuva liikenne). Tieliikenne on suurin saastuttaja 72,06 %:lla, meriliikenne toiseksi suurin ja ilmailu kolmas. Päästöt (CO2, NOx, SOx, HC, CO, ja PM) johtuvat pääasiassa moottoreista. Päästöt vahingoittavat ihmisten terveyttä, luontoa ja rakennettua ympäristöä. Meriliikenteen pääasialliset vaikutukset ovat ilmaston lämpenemisen voimistaminen sekä etenkin rannikkoalueiden ilmanlaadun heikentäminen. Päästöjä on hankalaa poistaa kokonaan, mutta niitä voidaan vähentää. IMOn MARPOL Annex VI and NTC 2008-teos sääntelee lähinnä typen ja rikin oksideja asettaen päästörajoja sekä antaen ohjeita päästöjen testaukselle. Myös hiilidioksidin sääntely on tekeillä. Rikin oksideja voidaan ensisijaisesti vähentää alentamalla polttoaineen sisältämää rikkiä, ja typen oksideja voidaan vähentää säätämällä moottorin palamisreaktiota. Toissijaisesti rikin oksideja voi poistaa asentamalla pakokaasupesuri ja typen oksideja voi vähentää asentamalla SCR-laite moottorin jälkeen. Lopputuloksena voidaan todeta, että opinnäytetyön päivitetyt tavoitteet saavutettiin, ja että meriala tulee kehittymään puhtaammaksi, koska ei ole muuta vaihtoehtoa. Opinnäytetyö, sekä sitä seuraavat kehitystyöt, tarjoavat Wärtsilälle arvokkaan ja käytännöllisen panoksen. Wärtsilän sisäisessä versiossa käydään läpi jatkokehitysideat. Tosin, voidaan jo todeta, että kerätty tutkimusmateriaali ja tähänastinen oppiminen riittävät ohjeen ja työkalujen ensimmäisten versioiden tekemiseen.
