The evaluation of a department chair involved a visit with the chair and then with the faculty members in their offices. The visit with each faculty did not have a time restraint. The selection of a new department chair involved the faculty committee developing a list of candidates. Dr. Fuller would call a friend at the University as well as read the letters of recommendation. When the candidate was in for a visit, Dr. Fuller preferred the faculty to make the final choice and he would sell the candidate on the merits of department and university. When Dr. Fuller, as Dean, was involved with selecting a faculty member, he wanted to compare the change in salary with time to the department averages. New departments should be added only when a long range need could be identified. The university administration must be willing to support the new department with high quality faculty and with other resources
