Plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) mediated plant disease resistance

Sustainable agriculture is vital in today's agricultural world, since itfulfils our future agricultural needs, where conventional agriculturalpractices fail. The soil microbiota plays a key role in plant growth and isan alternative to the conventional method of agricultural practice. Theplant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) inhabit around therhizosphere of the plant/on root surface and are involved directly orindirectly in promoting plant growth by production and secretion ofvarious regulatory chemicals in the vicinity of the rhizosphere. PGPRmediated plant growth promotion occurs by alteration of the wholemicrobial community in the rhizosphere niche via the production ofvarious substances. PGPR facilitates plant growth directly by assisting inacquisition of resources in the form of nitrogen, phosphorus and essentialminerals or modulating level of plant growth by producing numerous plant growth regulators, protecting plants from phytopathogens bycontrolling or inhibiting them, improving soil structure andbioremediating the polluted soils by sequestering toxic heavy metalspecies and degrading xenobiotic compounds. Various studies have beendocumented on PGPR application and their effect on increasing planthealth and productivity in both normal and stressed conditions. Therhizobacteria (PGPR) may decrease the global dependence on hazardousagrochemicals which destabilize the agro-ecosystems. The PGPRbelonging to the genera of Pseudomonas and Bacillus are well known fortheir antagonistic effects and for their ability to trigger induced systemicresistance (ISR) in plants. PGPR might be useful in formulating newinoculants with different mechanisms of action, leading to a moreefficient use of biocontrol strategies for improvement in croppingsystems. © 2017 by Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
