The metafiction, defined by Linda Hutcheon as “fiction about fiction – that is, fiction that includes within itself a commentary on its own narrative and / or linguistic identity” (1984, p. 1), is a contemporary tendency in progressive expansion in children’s literature. It is questioned, however, in this article, if the narrative of metafictional nature allows the construction of a more critical and reflective reader. And, in case of an affirmative answer, it is also asked how this fracture in the traditional way of writing literature for children and youth can help the young reader to be conceived as a collaborator rather than a mere passive consumer of a literary work.
