Transport energy consumption in Europe has reached a share of over 30 % of the total final energy consumed and transport contributes significantly to multiple environmental problems, including air emissions. In a joint research project, Transport and the Environment (VEU), Institutes of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG) have established a modelling framework for assessing air quality and climate effects of transport. In three explorative scenarios possible development pathways of the transportation system in Germany are analyzed. A concept to expand the findings to Europe is introduced.
