Zhang Zhidong (张之洞 2/9/1837-4/10/1909) acted as governor-general of Hubei and Hunan between 1889 and 1907. He was responsible for the building of the Beijing-Hankou railway. On the death of Liu Kunyi in October 1902 he acted as governor-general at Nanjing after which he returned to Wuchang. Hummel (1943) v.I pp. 27-32.
