Black and white lantern slide featuring a view of colonial style architecture in Hankow (Hankou). Hankou was opened as a port in 1861 following China's defeat in the Second Opium War (1856 - 1860), and foreign trading powers built residences and customs houses in the colonial style. This slide comes from a collection held by the Church of Scotland and generated by the medical missionary Charles Somerville, who worked for the London Missionary Society in Hankou from 1904 to 1914
